HR interview questions for freshers, with sample answers in English and Hinglish
Twenty questions that come up again and again in HR rounds for freshers. For each one you'll find what the interviewer is really asking, a strong sample answer in English, and a Hinglish version so you can practise the idea in the way you think.
The sample answers belong to Riya, an imaginary 2026 B.Tech (Computer Science) graduate. Use them to learn the shape of a good answer, then swap in your own projects, numbers and stories: interviewers ask follow-up questions, and a true answer is always the easiest to defend. The Hinglish versions are written as Riya speaks; if you're a man, change karti, chahti, sakti to karta, chahta, sakta.

Tips for the HR round
- Keep most answers to 60 to 90 seconds. Practise out loud with a timer; answers that feel short in your head often run long.
- Tell stories with STAR: the Situation, your Task, the Action you took and the Result. Numbers help ("300 students", "two days early").
- Know your resume well. Anything on it, from a project to a certificate, can become a question.
- Read about the company on its own website before the interview: what it does, who it works with and something recent.
- Practise the idea in Hinglish if that's easier, then say it in English. HR rounds are usually in English, and saying an answer aloud a few times makes it sound natural instead of memorised.
- For video interviews: keep the camera at eye level, sit facing a light, find a quiet room, and test your internet, camera and microphone beforehand.
- Keep your documents ready. TCS's NQT page asks shortlisted candidates to bring their original academic documents to the interview, and Accenture's campus portal asks you to carry your admit card, whose details are checked along with your government ID.
- If you don't know something, say so, and say how you would find out. It lands far better than guessing.

1Tell me about yourself.
What they're really asking: A short summary of who you are, what you've done and why you fit this job. It isn't your life story, and it often decides what they ask next, so mention things you're happy to talk about.
Sample answer
I'm Riya, a 2026 B.Tech graduate in Computer Science from Indore. In college I got interested in building things people actually use: my final-year project was a canteen pre-order app that around 300 students used every week. I also did a two-month internship at a small startup, where I fixed bugs in their billing website and saw how a real team works with code reviews and deadlines. I'm comfortable with Java and SQL, and I practise problem solving regularly. Now I want to start my career at a company where I can learn from large projects, and that's why I'm here.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Main Riya hoon, Indore se. Maine 2026 mein Computer Science mein B.Tech kiya hai. College mein mujhe aisi cheezein banana achha laga jo log sach mein use karein: mera final-year project ek canteen pre-order app tha, jo har hafte lagbhag 300 students use karte the. Maine ek startup mein do mahine ki internship bhi ki, jahan maine unki billing website ke bugs fix kiye aur dekha ki ek real team code reviews aur deadlines ke saath kaise kaam karti hai. Main Java aur SQL mein comfortable hoon aur regularly problem solving practice karti hoon. Ab main apna career aisi company se shuru karna chahti hoon jahan bade projects se seekh sakoon, isliye main yahan hoon.
2Why should we hire you?
What they're really asking: Can you connect your skills to what the job needs, back them with proof, and stay humble while you do it?
Sample answer
You need freshers who learn fast, work well in a team and can be trusted with deadlines. I've shown all three, in a small way: I learned React in three weeks to build my project, I worked on it with four teammates, and during my internship I closed every bug assigned to me before the sprint ended. I won't know everything on day one, but I pick things up quickly and I finish what I start.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Aapko aise freshers chahiye jo jaldi seekhein, team mein achha kaam karein aur jin par deadlines ke liye bharosa kiya ja sake. Maine ye teeno cheezein chhote level par karke dikhayi hain: project ke liye maine teen hafte mein React seekha, chaar teammates ke saath kaam kiya, aur internship mein jo bhi bugs mujhe diye gaye, sab sprint khatam hone se pehle close kiye. Pehle din se mujhe sab kuch nahi aayega, par main jaldi seekhti hoon aur jo kaam shuru karti hoon, use poora karti hoon.
3Why do you want to join our company?
What they're really asking: Have you read about them, or are you applying everywhere? Mention two or three specific, true things. Swap the reasons below for real ones from the company's own website.
Sample answer
Three things stand out to me. First, your training for new joiners: I want a strong start, and your programme is known for it. Second, the range of your clients means I could work in different domains instead of just one. Third, people I know who work here say they were given real responsibility early. I want to build a long career, and this feels like the right place to start it.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Mujhe teen cheezein khaas lagti hain. Pehli, naye joiners ki training: main ek strong start chahti hoon, aur aapka programme iske liye jaana jaata hai. Doosri, aapke clients itne alag-alag hain ki mujhe sirf ek nahi, kai domains mein kaam karne ka mauka milega. Teesri, jo log yahan kaam karte hain, wo kehte hain ki unhe jaldi real responsibility mili. Main ek lamba career banana chahti hoon, aur iski shuruaat ke liye ye sahi jagah lagti hai.
4What do you know about our company?
What they're really asking: A quick check that you've read about them. Two or three accurate facts are plenty: what they do, who they work with, and something recent. Fill in the brackets from the company's own website.
Sample answer
You're one of India's large IT services companies, working with clients around the world in areas like banking, retail and healthcare. You help them build and run software, move to the cloud and use AI, and you hire and train a large number of freshers every year. Recently I read about [a recent project or announcement from your website], which I found interesting because [one line on why].
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Aap India ki badi IT services companies mein se ek hain, aur duniya bhar mein banking, retail aur healthcare jaise sectors ke clients ke saath kaam karte hain. Aap unke liye software banate aur chalate hain, cloud par le jaate hain aur AI use karne mein madad karte hain, aur har saal bahut saare freshers ko hire aur train karte hain. Haal hi mein maine [aapki website par koi recent project ya announcement] ke baare mein padha, jo mujhe interesting laga kyunki [ek line mein kyun].
5What are your strengths?
What they're really asking: Pick one or two strengths that matter for the job and back each one with a short, real example. A list of words like "hardworking, honest, dedicated" proves nothing.
Sample answer
My biggest strength is that I stay with a problem until it's solved. In my project, the app kept crashing when many students ordered at once. After two evenings of reading logs, I found we were opening a new database connection for every order. I fixed that, and it never crashed again. I'm also organised: I keep a simple daily task list, which is how I managed my internship and final-year exams together.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Meri sabse badi strength ye hai ki jab tak problem solve na ho, main use chhodti nahi. Mere project mein, jab bahut saare students ek saath order karte the, app crash ho jaata tha. Do shaam logs padhne ke baad pata chala ki hum har order ke liye naya database connection khol rahe the. Maine use fix kiya, aur uske baad app kabhi crash nahi hua. Main organised bhi hoon: roz ki ek simple task list rakhti hoon, aur isi se maine internship aur final-year exams dono saath mein sambhale.
6What is your biggest weakness?
What they're really asking: Are you honest and aware of yourself? Name a real weakness that you can fix and that isn't central to the job, then spend most of the answer on what you're doing about it. Skip fake ones like "I work too hard".
Sample answer
I used to find it hard to speak up in group discussions. I'd have an idea but wait too long to share it. Over the last year I've worked on this by volunteering to present our project reviews and by joining the college coding club, where I now explain a solution to juniors every week. I'm much more comfortable now, though I still note down a few points before an important meeting.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Pehle mujhe group discussions mein bolna mushkil lagta tha. Idea hota tha, par share karne mein der kar deti thi. Pichhle ek saal mein maine is par kaam kiya: project reviews mein khud present karne ke liye aage aayi, aur college coding club join kiya, jahan ab main har hafte juniors ko ek solution samjhati hoon. Ab main kaafi comfortable hoon, phir bhi kisi important meeting se pehle kuch points likh leti hoon.
7Where do you see yourself in five years?
What they're really asking: Will you stay and grow here? Show ambition that fits inside the company, like deeper skills and more responsibility. You don't need to name a job title.
Sample answer
In five years I'd like to be someone my team relies on: strong in one technology area, trusted with the important parts of a project, and helping new joiners the way seniors will help me. Along the way I'd like to earn a cloud certification or two. I see myself growing inside the company rather than starting over somewhere else.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Paanch saal mein main chahti hoon ki team mujh par bharosa kare: main kisi ek technology mein strong rahoon, project ke important parts mujhe diye jaayein, aur main naye joiners ki waise hi madad karoon jaise seniors meri karenge. Saath mein ek-do cloud certifications bhi karna chahti hoon. Main khud ko isi company mein aage badhte hue dekhti hoon, kahin aur jaakar dobara shuru karte hue nahi.
8Tell me about a challenge you faced and how you handled it.
What they're really asking: They want a real story with a clear shape: the situation, what you had to do, what you did, and how it turned out. This is the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result).
Sample answer
Two weeks before our final-year project demo, one of our four teammates fell ill, and his part, the payment screen, hadn't been started. We still had to show a working app. I split his work into small tasks, took the hardest one myself, paired with another teammate on the rest, and we met for 30 minutes every evening to check progress. We finished two days early, the demo went smoothly, and the project got an A grade. I learned that breaking a big problem into small pieces makes it much easier to handle.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Final-year project demo se do hafte pehle, hamare chaar teammates mein se ek beemar ho gaya, aur uska part, payment screen, abhi shuru bhi nahi hua tha. Humein phir bhi working app dikhana tha. Maine uska kaam chhote tasks mein baanta, sabse mushkil task khud liya, baaki ek teammate ke saath milkar kiya, aur hum roz shaam 30 minute progress check karte the. Humne do din pehle kaam khatam kiya, demo achha gaya, aur project ko A grade mila. Maine seekha ki badi problem ko chhote hisson mein todne se wo kaafi aasaan ho jaati hai.
9Tell me about a time you worked in a team.
What they're really asking: Can you work with others, share credit and handle disagreements calmly? Make your own part clear instead of only saying "we did".
Sample answer
In my third year, four of us built the website for our college fest. I handled the registration page and the database. Halfway through, two teammates disagreed about the design and work stopped for a day. I suggested that each of them show a quick version to five students and that we go with the one they preferred. That settled it within an hour, and the site handled more than 1,200 registrations. I learned that a fair way to decide matters more than who is right.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Third year mein hum chaar logon ne apne college fest ki website banayi. Mera kaam registration page aur database tha. Beech mein do teammates ka design par disagreement ho gaya aur ek din kaam ruk gaya. Maine suggest kiya ki dono apna quick version paanch students ko dikhayein, aur jo unhe pasand aaye, hum wahi lein. Ek ghante mein baat sulajh gayi, aur site ne 1,200 se zyada registrations sambhale. Maine seekha ki "kaun sahi hai" se zyada zaroori hai faisla lene ka ek fair tareeka.
10Tell me about a time you failed.
What they're really asking: Can you own a mistake and learn from it? Pick a real failure that wasn't a disaster, take your share of the responsibility, and spend most of the answer on what you changed afterwards.
Sample answer
In my second year I took part in a 24-hour hackathon, and our team didn't finish. We spent so long planning features that nothing worked by the end, and I was the one who kept adding ideas, so part of that was on me. Since then I always build the simplest working version first and add features only once it runs. At our next hackathon we finished early and placed in the top ten.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Second year mein maine ek 24-ghante ke hackathon mein hissa liya, aur hamari team finish nahi kar paayi. Features plan karne mein itna time laga diya ki end tak kuch bhi kaam nahi kar raha tha, aur naye ideas jodti rehne wali main hi thi, toh galti mein mera bhi hissa tha. Uske baad se main hamesha pehle sabse simple working version banati hoon, aur uske chalne ke baad hi features jodti hoon. Agle hackathon mein humne jaldi finish kiya aur top ten mein aaye.
11How do you handle pressure and deadlines?
What they're really asking: Will you stay calm and organised when work piles up? Describe how you work, then give one example.
Sample answer
I break the work into small tasks, do the most important one first, and if something might slip, I say so early instead of at the last minute. During my internship, my final-year exams and a release deadline fell in the same week. I planned each day the night before, did internship work in the mornings and studied in the evenings, and told my manager two days ahead about one task that needed an extra day. Both went well.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Main kaam ko chhote tasks mein todti hoon, sabse zaroori task pehle karti hoon, aur agar kuch late ho sakta hai toh last minute ke bajaye pehle hi bata deti hoon. Internship ke time, mere final-year exams aur ek release deadline ek hi hafte mein aa gaye. Maine har din ka plan pichhli raat banaya, subah internship ka kaam kiya aur shaam ko padhai, aur ek task jismein ek din zyada lagna tha, uske baare mein manager ko do din pehle bata diya. Dono kaam achhe se ho gaye.
12Your branch isn't computer science. Why IT?
What they're really asking: Is this a real interest or just a fallback? Show what you've done on your own to learn, so the switch clearly looks like your choice.
Sample answer (for a Mechanical student)
I studied Mechanical Engineering, and in my third year I used Python to analyse data from a lab experiment. I enjoyed that more than anything else in the course, so I started learning properly: I finished a Python and SQL course, solved more than 150 coding problems, and built a small project that tracks machine maintenance schedules. Software lets me solve problems faster and for more people, so I want to build my career in it. My engineering background will also help me understand clients in manufacturing.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Maine Mechanical Engineering padhi hai, aur third year mein ek lab experiment ka data analyse karne ke liye Python use kiya. Mujhe wo course ki baaki sab cheezon se zyada achha laga, toh maine dhang se seekhna shuru kiya: Python aur SQL ka course poora kiya, 150 se zyada coding problems solve kiye, aur machine maintenance schedule track karne wala ek chhota project banaya. Software se main problems jaldi aur zyada logon ke liye solve kar sakti hoon, isliye main isi mein career banana chahti hoon. Mera engineering background manufacturing wale clients ko samajhne mein bhi kaam aayega.
13Your marks dropped in one semester. What happened?
What they're really asking: They aren't looking for a perfect record. They want an honest, short reason and proof that you recovered, without excuses or blaming anyone.
Sample answer
In my fourth semester my grades dropped to 6.4 because a health issue in my family meant I had to be at home for a few weeks. Once things settled, I covered the topics I'd missed with help from my professors and brought my grades back above 8 in the semesters after that. It taught me to plan ahead and to ask for help early.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Fourth semester mein family mein ek health issue ki wajah se mujhe kuch hafte ghar par rehna pada, aur mere grades 6.4 tak aa gaye. Sab theek hone ke baad maine professors ki madad se chhoote hue topics cover kiye, aur agle semesters mein grades phir se 8 se upar le aayi. Isse maine seekha ki pehle se plan karna aur time par madad maangna kitna zaroori hai.
14Are you willing to relocate?
What they're really asking: Large IT companies often place freshers wherever the projects are. A clear yes helps. If you have a real constraint, mention it politely and briefly.
Sample answer
Yes. I'm happy to work in whichever city the project needs me. Moving to a new place is also a chance to grow and become more independent, and I'm ready for that.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Haan, bilkul. Project jis bhi city mein ho, main wahan kaam karne ke liye ready hoon. Nayi jagah jaana aage badhne aur zyada independent banne ka mauka bhi hai, aur main iske liye taiyaar hoon.
15Are you okay with night shifts or rotational shifts?
What they're really asking: Some projects support clients in other time zones. They want an honest answer, because agreeing now and refusing later causes trouble for both sides.
Sample answer
Yes. I understand that some projects support clients in other time zones, so working hours can change. I'd make sure I stay healthy and alert on any shift. If there's anything I should know about how shifts work for new joiners, I'd be glad to hear it.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Haan. Main samajhti hoon ki kuch projects doosre time zones ke clients ko support karte hain, toh kaam ke ghante badal sakte hain. Main dhyaan rakhungi ki kisi bhi shift mein healthy aur alert rahoon. Agar naye joiners ki shifts ke baare mein kuch jaanna zaroori ho, toh main zaroor sunna chahungi.
16If the job has a service agreement, will you sign it?
What they're really asking: Some employers ask new joiners to commit to a set period because they invest in their training. Read the terms in your offer letter first; if you're fine with them, say so plainly.
Sample answer
Yes. I understand the company invests a lot in training new joiners, so asking for a commitment in return is fair. I'm planning to build my career here, so staying for that period isn't a concern for me. I'll read the terms carefully when I get the offer letter.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Haan. Main samajhti hoon ki company naye joiners ki training par kaafi invest karti hai, toh badle mein commitment maangna fair hai. Main yahin apna career banana chahti hoon, toh utne time tak rukna mere liye koi problem nahi hai. Offer letter milne par main terms dhyaan se padhungi.
17What if you get a better offer later?
What they're really asking: Will you leave soon after they've hired and trained you? Show commitment without pretending you have no other options.
Sample answer
I'm applying here because this is where I want to start, not as a backup. If you make me an offer, I'll accept it and put my full focus on training and work. For me, a good start in the right place matters more than a small difference in salary.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Main yahan isliye apply kar rahi hoon kyunki main yahin se shuruaat karna chahti hoon, backup ke taur par nahi. Agar aap mujhe offer dete hain, toh main use accept karke poora focus training aur kaam par rakhungi. Mere liye sahi jagah par achhi shuruaat, salary ke thode farak se zyada maayne rakhti hai.
18What are your salary expectations?
What they're really asking: In large fresher hiring drives the package is often set in advance for each role. They want to see that you understand this and that money isn't your only reason for joining.
Sample answer
As a fresher, I understand the package for this role is set by the company, and I'm comfortable with it. Right now my priority is to learn and do good work, and I'm confident the growth will follow.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Fresher hone ke naate main samajhti hoon ki is role ka package company tay karti hai, aur main usse comfortable hoon. Abhi meri priority seekhna aur achha kaam karna hai, aur mujhe yakeen hai ki growth apne aap aayegi.
19What are your hobbies?
What they're really asking: A chance to show who you are outside your marks. Pick real hobbies you can talk about for a minute, because they may ask a follow-up question.
Sample answer
I play badminton most evenings. It keeps me fresh, and it's taught me to stay calm when I'm behind in a game. I also enjoy teaching: in the college coding club I explain one problem to juniors every week, and preparing for that has made my own basics much stronger.
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Main zyaadatar shaam ko badminton khelti hoon. Isse main fresh rehti hoon, aur game mein peeche hone par bhi calm rehna seekha hai. Mujhe padhana bhi achha lagta hai: college coding club mein main har hafte juniors ko ek problem samjhati hoon, aur uski taiyaari se mere apne basics bhi kaafi strong ho gaye hain.
20Do you have any questions for us?
What they're really asking: Always ask one or two; it shows real interest. Ask about the work and how you'll learn, and leave questions about leave or salary for later.
Sample answer
Yes, two. What does the training for new joiners focus on, and how is training performance used when people are placed on projects? And what do your most successful freshers usually have in common?
Hinglish, to practise the idea
Haan, do sawaal hain. Naye joiners ki training kis cheez par focus karti hai, aur projects dete waqt training ki performance ka kaise use hota hai? Aur aapke sabse successful freshers mein aam taur par kya baat common hoti hai?
Before the day
- Write your own answer to each question in a line or two, not a full script. Bullet points are easier to remember and sound more natural.
- Record yourself answering five questions on your phone, then watch it once. Most people spot their own filler words ("basically", "actually") straight away.
- Do one mock round with a friend who asks the questions in a random order and adds a follow-up to each.
- Get a good night's sleep, keep a copy of your resume nearby, and join or arrive 10 to 15 minutes early.
