Tell me about yourself: sample answer for freshers
“Tell me about yourself” is the first question in most HR rounds for freshers. Here are three sample answers in English with a Hinglish version of each, what the interviewer is really asking, and how to make the answer yours.
What they are really asking
Not your life story. A short summary of who you are, what you have done and why you fit this job, in about 60 seconds. It often decides what they ask next, so mention things you are happy to talk about. Pick one project, one internship or team experience, two skills you use well, and one line on why you want this company.
Sample 1: Computer Science fresher (Riya, 2026, Indore)
Sample answer in English
I'm Riya, a 2026 B.Tech graduate in Computer Science from Indore. In college I got interested in building things people actually use: my final-year project was a canteen pre-order app that around 300 students used every week. I also did a two-month internship at a small startup, where I fixed bugs in their billing website and saw how a real team works with code reviews and deadlines. I'm comfortable with Java and SQL, and I practise problem solving regularly. Now I want to start my career at a company where I can learn from large projects, and that's why I'm here.
Hinglish, the same idea
Main Riya hoon, Indore se. Maine 2026 mein Computer Science mein B.Tech kiya hai. College mein mujhe aisi cheezein banana achha laga jo log sach mein use karein: mera final-year project ek canteen pre-order app tha, jo har hafte lagbhag 300 students use karte the. Maine ek startup mein do mahine ki internship bhi ki, jahan maine unki billing website ke bugs fix kiye aur dekha ki ek real team code reviews aur deadlines ke saath kaise kaam karti hai. Main Java aur SQL mein comfortable hoon aur regularly problem solving practice karti hoon. Ab main apna career aisi company se shuru karna chahti hoon jahan bade projects se seekh sakoon, isliye main yahan hoon.
Sample 2: non-CS branch, switching to IT
Sample answer in English
I studied Mechanical Engineering, and in my third year I used Python to analyse data from a lab experiment. I enjoyed that more than anything else in the course, so I started learning properly: I finished a Python and SQL course, solved more than 150 coding problems, and built a small project that tracks machine maintenance schedules. Software lets me solve problems faster and for more people, so I want to build my career in it. My engineering background will also help me understand clients in manufacturing.

Maine Mechanical Engineering padhi hai, aur third year mein ek lab experiment ka data analyse karne ke liye Python use kiya. Mujhe wo course ki baaki sab cheezon se zyada achha laga, toh maine dhang se seekhna shuru kiya: Python aur SQL ka course poora kiya, 150 se zyada coding problems solve kiye, aur machine maintenance schedule track karne wala ek chhota project banaya. Software se main problems jaldi aur zyada logon ke liye solve kar sakti hoon, isliye main isi mein career banana chahti hoon. Mera engineering background manufacturing wale clients ko samajhne mein bhi kaam aayega.
Sample 3: no internship yet, college projects only
Sample answer in English
I'm Aman, a final-year BCA student from Lucknow. I haven't had an internship yet, so I focused on building projects in college: a library management system in Java and a small e-commerce site where I handled the backend and the database. Both taught me how to break a big task into small pieces and to check my work with tests. I also help run our college coding club, where I explain one problem to juniors every week, which has made my basics stronger. I'm eager to start learning from a real team and to contribute where I can.
Hinglish, the same idea
Main Aman hoon, Lucknow se BCA final year ka student hoon. Internship abhi nahi ki hai, isliye maine college mein projects par focus kiya: Java mein library management system aur ek chhota e-commerce site, jahan maine backend aur database ka kaam kiya. In dono ne mujhe sikhaya ki bade task ko chhote pieces mein kaise todte hain aur tests se kaise check karte hain. Main hamare college coding club mein juniors ko har hafte ek problem samjhata hoon, jisse mere basics strong hue hain. Main ek real team se seekhne aur jahan ho sake contribute karne ke liye taiyaar hoon.
Make it yours (1-minute check)

- Use numbers only if they are true (for example "around 300 students").
- Practise out loud for 60 seconds. Record yourself once and listen: are you clear, calm and specific?
- With Savyly, type
/practice hrto practise this question and the next ones: Savyly asks, you answer, it gives feedback and a stronger answer. How the mock interview works.
